An American Carol: Not playing in San Luis Obispo

Shame on San Luis Obispo theaters, shame on the theater chains and shame on the entire Hollywood machine.  The movie, “An American Carol,” opened on October 3rd, but the powers that be decided that San Luis Obispo shouldn’t see it.  Why is that? Because the movie makes of fun of liberals like Michael Moore, who by the way have no problem making fun of conservatives.

I can hear you now, “hey, it was a minor movie with nobody worth seeing in it” or “the movie was no good.”  Taking the latter first, that certainly has never held back a movie before, that’s for sure–especially one with a liberal political point to make.  As for the charge that it was a nothing movie with nobody worth watching in it, let me abuse you of that notion.  First of all it was written and directed by the very successful David Zucker, whose credits include Airplane!, The Naked Gun, Sci Fi Movie, and a few dozen more.  I reference these movies to his credit in particular, not because they are top notch movies, but because they were made in the same vein of comedy as An American Carol, and extremely successful. The only difference is that Zucker thought he would lampoon liberal institutions for a change of pace. Well, how dare he! That is just not done, and the consequences of this offense are obvious — few openings for the movie. And zero openings in San Luis Obispo county.  And what about star power? It was pretty much on par with other movies he’s written and/or directed like this (that were playing in nearly every theater in America, by the way): Leslie Neilson, James Woods, Jon Voight, Dennis Hopper, Kelsey Grammar, and more.  Was it the cameo by Bill O’Reilly that really made the censorship switch flip? I would not doubt it.

You can find awful (and untruthful) movies by Michael Moore and even Al Gore “at theaters everywhere,” as they say; in fact you can find them playing in our shameful public library and public schools, both of which only show one side to any political issue. Does this offend “free speech” liberals (there is an oxymoron!) in San Luis Obispo? If so, I’d sure like to hear from you.  I have a feeling I won’t.

Conservatives have to put up with the bashing of our views on nearly every television show and movie, in both overt and subtle ways. We even laugh at ourselves along with you.  But liberals, especially in this town, have no sense of humor.  They cannot laugh at themselves. The only laugh they get is when they make the call to the ACLU to complain that someone is making fun of them.  These people are easy to spot on the streets of SLO too — they are the unhappy looking ones, so grim.  Come on libs, come on theater operators, come on Hollywood, lighten up, and at least try to pretend to play fair once in a while. It’s a stretch, but you might even try laughing at yourselves once in a while.

One Response to “An American Carol: Not playing in San Luis Obispo”

  1. Honey, I believe in free speech, but a film that makes fun of global warming and the peoples’ heroes like Michael Moore, maybe shouldn’t be allowed to play. It’s a dangerous movie for our society and if theaters won’t show it, fine with me.
