FAQ
Who is allowed to write articles?
Anyone who is a resident of San Luis Obispo, or who is in some way connected to San Luis Obispo, who wishes to express an opinion that relates to San Luis Obispo.
But what if I’m not a good writer?
Well, give it a shot anyway. You don’t need to be a great writer, but you do need to be able to clearly express your opinion. If you are unsure of the clarity of your writing, have someone else read it over before submitting it to us.
What types of articles do you want?
The article must be related to San Luis Obispo in some way. And it needs to express an opinion of yours that you can back up. It’s pretty much like the local paper’s editorial pages, but unlike them we will not post letters from idiots (sorry to idiots). You can submit something as short as 2-3 paragraphs if you are making a good point (like a letter to the editor) or as long as a complete editorial.
Does the site have a political slant?
No. The owner of the site does, like anyone else, but the site is politically agnostic. If an article of yours is rejected, there is no chance that it was rejected based upon your political viewpoint, but for other reasons. It is in the site’s interest to have controversial articles, where each on makes someone happy and someone else angry. Without that, it’s just too boring to visit.
Can I include images?
We discourage images, as they are usually unnecessary for an opinion piece, and they just add to the complexity of layout. But, if you feel it’s required let us know.
Do i need to use my real name?
Yes. No guts, no glory.
How to I update my profile information?
You can update your first name, last name, email, password and biographical information by clicking “Profile” in the User Controls section.
How do I get a photo of myself on my author page and next to my comments?
These images are gravatars (globally Recognized Avatars). If you do not have one, simply go to Gravatar.com and upload an image to an account based upon the same email address that you are using for your SLOpinion.com account. The benefit of setting up a gravatar is that it is recognized by a huge number of sites.
Can I push my business, as an author?
Yes. In your profile you can enter the URL of your business and you can mention it in your bio. These will show up on your author page. In addition, you are allowed to place an italized line or two at the end of your article saying something about yourself (but please keep it short).
